Caution and Resilience in Times of Turbulence

Cristiane Barreto, PhD

Leadership

Organizations are open systems absorbing constant shocks from the environments that surround them. No decision can responsibly be made without reading the current market scenario carefully, and with genuine caution.

Organizations are open systems that absorb the cultural, social, economic, and financial impact of the places where they operate. They cannot make decisions without first analyzing the current scenario and market context. As Peter Drucker, widely regarded as the father of modern management, put it: "Wherever you see a successful business, you can believe that at some point someone made a courageous decision."

If every genuine change must begin with a human being, because everything else follows as a consequence, how can organizations justify not making that investment? Waste, high turnover, business stagnation, low performance, loss of talent, and loss of market share can only change when companies recognize that every process, to have validity, passes through people.

People Management Belongs to Everyone

It is astonishing that even in the 21st century one still hears professionals across industries say that "people work" belongs to Human Resources, a simplistic and narrow view. People management is everyone's responsibility, regardless of their area. Every executive needs to understand people. More precisely, every executive needs to know themselves.

Investing only in technical competencies and believing these are solid foundations for a successful career is a form of backwardness: it reflects ignorance of the behavioral, emotional, and spiritual competencies this century actually requires for better results. The resistance to investing in people remains alarming. The business success stories of today and the future must overcome this organizational bias and redistribute budgets to account for this still-neglected dimension.

Resilience: Not a Reaction but a Foundation

It is essential to prepare people to be progressively better: not only when situations become alarming, not only when crisis arrives, but as an ongoing investment in organizational health. Resilience has never been more necessary than it is right now.

In psychology, resilience is the capacity of human beings to overcome adversity, including losses, unexpected changes of any kind, crises, and stress, with minimal dysfunction in behavior, adapting and adjusting while creating new opportunities for development through the lessons extracted from experience.

Responding to problems consistently and with an optimistic orientation, handling the unpredictable difficulties and challenges of today's market: this is what distinguishes more prepared and capable professionals. Caution, in this sense, is not timidity. It is the wisdom to read situations clearly before acting, combined with the resilience to keep moving forward once the path is chosen.

Organizations that build these twin capacities into their leadership culture, reading environments carefully while responding with adaptability and determination, will consistently prove themselves more capable of navigating turbulence than those who rely on technical expertise alone.
